It doesn’t happen often, but there have been 2 or 3 times over the years that a bag of flour gets pushed out of the way, only to be discovered WAY after the expiration date! 

I just didn’t have the heart to throw it away (have your seem flour prices?), so I started thinking about what I could do with it. I remembered how excited I was as a child when my friend’s mother let us make homemade playdough, and it was such a treat for me that I knew our old flour now had a purpose. 

I found this recipe below – it’s safe and it smells fabulous -  thanks to Kool-Aid packs! The only thing to consider is that if you are using old flour, I wouldn’t let the little ones take a taste.

Homemade Fruity Playdough Recipe

Taken from “Let’s Learn Our Colors and Shapes!”  – Week 1

Ingredients:

1 cup flour 

1 packet of Kool-Aid mix 

 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar

1 Tablespoon vegetable oil 

1/4 cup salt 

3/4 cup boiling water (the original recipe called for one cup of boiling water, but I found it made the dough too loose- aim for 3/4 cup and add more if needed)

Mix all dry ingredients in bowl then oil, then pour boiling water in and mix thoroughly. Wrap in cellophane or air tight container and store in fridge. The play dough should last a few months.

Old flour has been a good excuse for me to make homemade playdough, since making enough for our family would involve a LOT of flour (which is expensive). One tip should you not want to leave old flour waiting for bugs – store it in your freezer until you’re ready to pull it out for this activity.

I’ve learned to keep my eyes open for creative ways to make something from what most would consider nothing. And it can be SO MUCH FUN!

But what I want to keep in mind is that although the year has ended, it hasn’t necessarily been lost. We’ve either used our time for God’s glory – which is forever – or yes, we have lost opportunities to honor and serve Him.

Everyday we are given 24 hours to live, and at the end of each day, it’s gone. Time will always be, but once a moment has passed, it is forever passed and we can never get it back. Again, are those moments captured for the Lord, or are they lost on the things of this world?

As a parent, this is a sobering thought. These moments with my children are the ONLY moments that I will have with them at this exact stage in their lives. These moments are the ONLY moments that I have been given the greatest blessing – to be able to share the Lord with their tender hearts; teaching them to know, love, and trust Him.

These are the only moments that I’ll have to spend with my little ones while they are little. These are the only times I can demonstrate obedience to the Lord’s calling to them, as I obey God’s Word in regards to being a wife and mother.

These are the only moments they’ll still want to give me hugs every day, want to sit in my lap and listen to me read, or draw me little love notes.  This moment is time that God has entrusted us with… how are we using it?

I’m excited to create goals with our children for this upcoming year. We’re adding a life skill for the children to learn about this year (they actually were equipped to learn their skills as part of Christmas).

But more than learning life skills, I want us to focus on our relationship with the Lord. How can we encourage children to do this?

For one, daily Bible reading. Another idea is to encourage children to join in a family prayer – not just listening, but praying. One thing our family did when I was a girl was to keep a prayer journal. This was neat to look back over later and see how God answered our prayers.

Pray that God begins to lay on your child’s heart what He calls them to do in their lives, and that He gives you wisdom as a parent in guiding and instructing them. Pray that you as a parent will know how to love these precious souls God has placed in our care while on this earth.

We can never fix the mistakes we made this year, but we can trust in the Lord to teach us to hear and follow Him more closely this next year as we shepherd our children – His sheep.
