Easter or Resurrection Sunday?

We’re still a week away, but I know many have questions and are seeking for what the Lord would have them to do. The following  is what the Lord has shown us He would have do with our family. We encourage you to pray and seek His will concerning you and your families, and not base any decision on what the world does, or what others (myself included) might say.

For many years, I never thought twice about saying Easter. This was the day we celebrated the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, and children enjoyed egg hunts and playing with cute little bunnies. Innocent enough?

Then one year I was excited to find some inexpensive plastic eggs for our children to hide. We could put Christian related things inside of them – like making our own Resurrection Eggs. I was shocked when my husband shared he wasn’t comfortable with this!

I began searching online what the various typical “Easter” things were – the bunny, the egg, and even the name – and the Lord showed me right then that the reservations my husband had were indeed valid.

I never realized the pagan origins of such “innocent” symbols. The name Easter comes from the Saxon goddess, Eastre, who was the goddess of the dawn and the spring. This is the time of year where new birth in animals and people abound, and Eastre’s sacred animal was the rabbit – because of it’s rapid reproduction and fertility prosperity. Thus the “Easter Bunny”.

According to the legends, Eastre arrived late one spring, and one day she found a bird whose wing had frozen in the snow. To try and make things right with this bird that could no longer fly, she turned it into a snow hare and gave it the ability to lay beautiful colored eggs. Hmm….

But these weren’t things that I focused on… at least that was my argument. I wanted the eggs to represent the new life in Christ. God created the egg, and there is nothing wrong with it. God made the rabbits and said they were good.

As I verbalized my intentions to my husband, I could hear with each word I spoke the Lord speaking back to me, and He pulled back the blinders from all I had ever known -

  • This day is the day I am celebrating His resurrection. So why was I calling this day the name of some goddess rather than claming it as a day for my risen Lord?
  • The new life extended to me comes from a blood stained cross, not from colored eggs from a mystical rabbit.

I will admit it was hard to give up the “fun” aspect that the world offers on this day, but then I look at what those words really say and realize that this isn’t about a fun day, or what the world has to offer me.

This day is here because Jesus Christ allowed men to beat Him, pierce Him, mock Him, and kill Him. Chills cover me and tears fill my eyes as I simply write it down.

No, there is nothing “fun” about this holy time. There is nothing magical. It’s a sacred and holy time. Nothing the world offers can compare to what my God has offered, and there is no other way I feel I can honor this day than by honoring Him, and Him alone.

Blessings,

Mrs. Candace

The “Put On” Chart from Doorposts – Review

Have you ever found yourself asking your child, “Can you just be nice?”

If they have siblings, I’ll accept a YES for your answer. :)

Are you looking for lessons to help your children understand Biblical characteristics which not only teach on a child’s level, but take them straight to where God teaches us these lessons in the Bible?

Well, I grew up homeschooled on some of Doorposts’ wonderful products, and this is yet another one that does not fail!

Daniel sent us the “Put On” Chart to review, and with our busy crew, there are many character lessons to discuss (and often). Here’s a look at how we’ve used this book in our home:

Each day we get dressed – how? We have a shirt, pants/skirt, shoes, etc… Children understand these and their purpose. I like to let my children pour over the laminated color chart that came with the book we received and see the different items as I share about them.

Pam Forster (Doorposts momma), has taken these items and applied Biblical lessons to them – and even as an adult, I relate to the analogies!

We’ve learned how our hands can reach out and show compassion to the hurting, the shoes on our feet take us to do an act of kindness for someone else, and the belt teaches forgiveness as it holds us close together as a family.

It’s exciting to me when my children find a book and bring it to me to read to them from, and this book is one of them. Since we prefer the KJV, I read the lesson from the book, and let our 7 year old son read the correlating verses from his Bible. He really enjoys being a part of this time, and I love the opportunity for him to practice being the “leader” while Daddy isn’t here.

Our bunch is younger (7 and under), so when we’ve used this book, we’ve divided the lessons in half. That works good for us since we discuss a lot as we read. I also like to review the previous day before starting on Day 2 because it reinforces what they’ve already learned.

With each quality, you’re given examples from the Bible of men or women which display that quality. We like to begin that section by guessing, for instance, who in the Bible showed humility and how. After they come up with their choices, I read the suggested passages and they listen to see who each passage is about.

After reading the passages, there are follow-up questions to answer. For example, we read in John 13 how Jesus demonstrated humility when took on the role of a servant and washed the feet of His disciples. Rather than being served, He served. Did Jesus deserved to be served? What did He tell His disciples to do? How can we serve others?

Mrs. Forster has done an excellent job of giving a visual children understand, teaching a lesson on their level, providing the Scripture basis, and then following up with questions at the end.

As an added bonus to the book and chart (which comes with the option of color laminated or B/W coloring), you can print out paper dolls and dress them with the qualities you learn in the book! This is great for the little ones to play while reading.

Job VERY well done, Doorposts, and thank you for the Biblical lessons you’ve taught not only me over the years, but now my children!

Money Saving Mom’s Budget – Review/ Blog Tour

I was excited to receive word a few weeks ago that I would be receiving an audio copy of “The Money Saving Mom’s Budget”, written by Crystal Paine of Money Saving Mom, to review and share with you!

Growing up, I was very conscious of how I spent every little penny. I loved being frugal and stretching a dollar as far as it would go. I knew that I wanted to be a stay at home mom one day, so I saved as much as I could.

As a newlywed, I was excited to shop certain stores on certain days and between certain hours to get triple coupons, mark downs on meat, and special limited time sales. I was couponing and deal shopping before it became popular, and the thrill from saving was indescribable! :)

Now fast forward 9 years to life as a mom of 5, where I struggle to play the coupon game and feel bad paying full price for one or two ingredients a few times a week, just because I don’t plan ahead.

I want to shop ads and use coupons, but I just can’t seem to find the time to do it! I’m always busy, but still come short of doing it all. DH has been doing most of our shopping on his way home from work, but price matching/ couponing in’t as much fun for him as it is me, so we don’t do it.

I went into this book review with the mindset that I wanted to see what tips Crystal shared that I, as a mom, could begin to teach my own children in regards to money. From there, I could share with you how these have been good in regards to our children…

I believe that just as it’s important to teach our children to gain wisdom in regards to character and obedience to God, it’s also important to teach them to be wise with the financial blessings God gives us.

But honestly, I came out learning so much more than just money! I fell in love with the book before she even got to the money saving part. We started implementing things that first listening session.

As I shared in my last post, I had already started writing down my priorities and what needs were pressing. It was wonderful to feel the stress lifting as I marked these items off one by one. I eventually finished that first list, and am now working on a second – and yes, there will be a 3rd… but first things first. :)

I was so encouraged and inspired to begin listening to the audio book just a week after starting my plan. Why? Because Crystal begins by discussing organization and de-cluttering! Sometimes it’s nice to hear what you already know, just to know you are on the right course.

She encourages you to set goals, write them down, and break them down into things you know you can accomplish. She even gives you the forms to use should you need them. If we don’t have a final destination in mind, how can we get there?

Crystal shares that when we are constantly burdened by the clutter and chaos in our lives and schedules, we misplace things, overlook things, neglect things, etc… There are bills that might have late fees, or sale ads that we come across only after the sale is over when our lives are clutter with other things.

As an adult, I like to think that I no longer have to make a list for myself in order to get things accomplished, or that I no longer need to write out my day hour by hour. A budget seems like something other people need – and I’m exempt because I rarely buy anything aside from needs.

But in reality, I look back and see how productive I used to be when I did these things, and now I feel as if I’m always grasping for straws of time, order, or savings.

Just to share from our story – when doing our taxes this year and adding up the internet sales  to calculate use tax, I was shocked to see HOW MUCH we had spent on internet purchases. Those $2 and $3 things can add up quickly!

These tools work and Crystal shares exactly how to make them work. As someone familiar with how the “money game” works, I can say that she offers wonderful advice that is practical for beginners as well as for those that are already saving.

You learn where to look for deals, how to earn extra money, and hear real life stories along the way. She shares about couponing and buying in bulk. There is really something for everyone!

This book made me think, and I’m actually rethinking some of my current trends. There have been many inspiring stories on MoneySavingMom.com over the past few years, and after hearing Crystal read the book, I became more enthused to live simply.

I don’t see that I’ll be implementing everything right now, but that’s okay. What works for one might not work for another. Some things I did as a teenager and I loved it (such as the schedule), but right now I have to be flexible with a baby and other young children in the house.

I don’t want to reveal too much from the book, but I can honestly say that she has tons of great information and inspiration for those seeking not only to improve their money situation, but getting on track with goals in life in general as well. I’m grateful for the chance to have heard it!

My children learned how we’re not saving money when a toy on the floor gets broken, or a book gets a drink spilled on it, or we have to buy extra clothes because we’ve misplaced part of an outfit… they understand those stories. They can see how money in an envelope is a concrete thing - you only have to spend what you have in there.

I’ve watched Crystal over the years and she has lived out these principles - she’s real. She and her husband are offering their profits from the book to Compassion International – which they are able to do because they are debt free and able to share generously with others as the Lord leads them to.

I’d encourage you to celebrate the release of the book with Crystal by entering her iPad2 Giveaway (a GREAT tool to keep track of your budget!) and RSVPing to the Live Webcast Event on 4/5!

Discouraged?

I cannot tell you how many days I have felt discouraged as a mother, wife, and homeschooling teacher over the years! Children seem to have a knack for making messes, complaining about chores, or simply just having a bad mood – all of which make Mom stressed and discouraged.

When I’m feeling overwhelmed, things don’t get done as much and I find myself grumpy, which in turn makes everyone else grumpy.

A  few weeks ago, I reached the point of ENOUGH! I was falling behind in things that really couldn’t be neglected and needed to get a hold on things before I went crazy. Been there? (please tell me you are nodding your head???) :)

I sat down and really evaluated it all, and started getting a workable plan in place. I was excited to see that the plan I implemented (again) worked (again), but my mind drifted off to the thoughts of how I have got to this point before, only to slide back into the old style.

It was then that I found out I was receiving an audio book to review for you all, and while the title suggests a different topic, the Lord has been teaching me about my own life through the early chapters. I can not WAIT to finish the book and be able to share it with you!! I’ve been encouraged to finally feel a peace and excitement about things – rather than overwhelmed.

A few more weeks and I’ll be done, as well as have a few weeks to be able to share how the system has worked for me. But I can’t leave you hanging with that…

So for now, accept my encouragement that there IS hope for easier, less stress filled days! Start where I started – make a list of EVERY SINGLE THING that comes to your mind that you need to be doing. Pay the water bill, call and make an appointment, do your taxes… whatever comes to mind, write it down.

I found that my list included tasks that I had put off for months and months! Within two weeks, I had marked off every single thing from that first list, and it felt GREAT.

After having the more urgent, personal things done, I then moved along to a list for our business. This list is going to take a bit longer than two weeks, but it’s so much easier to stay focused when I know what’s most important.

You won’t be hearing as much from me over the next few weeks, as I’m chipping away at my To-Do list. But that’s OK! I want to encourage you to do the same. Focus on the tasks at hand, and sometimes that means stepping away from other things for a brief time.

You’ll find that you feel better, which makes your family/ home feel better and run much more smoothly!

Leap Year Time Capsule

Our local bargain hunter newspaper writer shared an interesting idea today – making a 2012 Time Capsule!

This day only comes once every 4 years, so make it extra special by doing an activity now that will be exciting to open in 4 years – on February 29, 2016.

What things do you think will be fun to look back on one day? What is the price of milk, gas, and a loaf of bread? Save receipts to look back on.

What clothes were in style – or hair styles? Take a family picture! Save a newspaper to see what was going on in the world, write a letter to your future self, make a list of what you did today, and write what plans you have for this year and the future.

Have fun, and remember, “Don’t Open Until 2016″!

Guard Them

As our children have recently decided they are growing up and not staying babies (sigh…), I’m finding that some of them are outgrowing of our toddler Bible movies.

We don’t really watch a lot of television shows – we don’t even have modern technology (that is, we still use rabbit ears). :)

Recently I had heard about an internet tv/ movie streaming website, Hulu, that was free. First off, there are a LOT of things pictured that I had no clue were out there! Use caution with little eyes…

After searching for quite some time, I finally came across what I remembered as a cute little wholesome comedy show from maybe the 1960s. We have so enjoyed the past few weeks sitting together at nights watching this show.

We laughed at first at how quickly the little ones – even our 2 year old – learned to sing the song. After they started singing it non-stop, and constantly talking about it, I knew there was a problem. We stopped watching it for a little while.

Our explanation for this was that God is to be the most important in our lives, but by always talking about something else, we were exalting that to a higher place than it should be. This made sense to the older ones, but they still enjoyed the show and missed watching it.

The other night they asked (again) if they could just watch one show. I’ll admit I did miss sharing in their excitement, and laughing together at some of the funny things that we would see. I dismissed my concerns about a few things here and there that had bothered me and left the decision up to hubby with an ”OK” from me.

I was feeding the baby, so not watching at first, and I could hear a few things that bothered me. They were implying that a mysterious woman had powers to break things when her name was spoken. The show was making this out to be funny. I knew it wasn’t real, but…

Before I knew it, it was too late.

An image of this lady suddenly popped up on a mirror and terrified my poor children! I knew they were scared right away, but didn’t realize how much of an impact that 5 seconds had made until later.

“Why did they put that scary lady on there, Mommy?”

I had to wipe tears, comfort with words, sing hymns, and pray until they fell asleep. Even still, days later, we have two little ones that fear night time because they think of this. I feel terrible.

Here I am, their mother, and I let down my guard. These children are God’s children, and I’m supposed to be raising them for His glory. Little by little, the subtle things that bothered me slipped by me, and we accepted them since they were “minor” – and there was more humor in the show than the very occassional “bad” things.

As I sat by one of my little ones as they fell asleep that night, the Lord really convicted me. I was reminded of two verses. One is Matthew 10:16 – “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

The other is 1 Peter 5:8 – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

We as Christians are foolish if we don’t think the devil will try anything he can to get to our children. These “minor” things are seen as laughable to the world, and as “too minor to worry about” to the church. I slipped and fell into that last part.

We need to seek God’s wisdom as parenst because there are wolves around every corner. We need to be wise and realize that there is no such thing as relaxed parenting for Christians. We must try the spirits, as the Bible tells us, to see if they be from God.

It’s these little things that our hearts get used to, and then it’s just a little bit more, and a little bit more… before you know it your entire belief system is different. I speak from past personal experience.

Dads and Moms, please be vigilant in guarding not only your hearts, but also the hearts, eyes, and minds of your children. The things they see and the words they hear can never be removed from them once they are there.

Look at the innocent eyes of the little girl at the top of the post. You and me – WE – are responsible for keeping these eyes and hearts pure.

The other issue that bothered me was the dress from time to time. Thankfully, our boys were quick to cover their eyes or turn their heads, but they still saw a split second. That was one split second too much in my opinion. It might be innocent to a young boy, but young men and men are very visual, and their eyes and hearts must be guarded carefully.

Here’s the thing… If I allow them now to be exposed to a “minor” suggestive dress code, what’s to stop them from eventually getting used to that, and then a little more, and then something sinful?

I know this is a very personal, touchy subject, but it’s been heavy on my heart and I really want Sonbeams to be a place where I share what the Lord is teaching me in this season of parenthood.

The world might mock me, but the Lord made it clear in my heart what I am to do from this time forward. I have apologized for allowing them to watch the show, and they understand and agree that we shouldn’t watch it anymore. Why not? Because they know that there could always be something they see that isn’t from the Lord, and they don’t want any part of that.

Teach them early, and trust God’s promise to us in Proverbs 22:6!

Valentine Dessert Surprise!

Tomorrow is Valentine’s and we’re having fun being sneaky around here, making cards and surprises for one another.

We’ll start our day with our yearly Valentine heart shaped pancakes, covered with maple syrup w/ blended strawberries for a pink tint.

For snack we have yogurt that was intended to be mixed w/ strawberries, but the store was out of vanilla and hubby bought low fat French Vanilla… hmmm… not sure how good that would be w/ strawberries, but we’ll see. :)

Dinner is already making me hungry – homemade lasagna with french bread and salad. For dessert, I’m surprising the little ones with homemade cinnamon rolls, but giving them this little Valentine twist I saw on Pinterest the other day.

Aren’t these cute!! The original poster is here. I just have to remember to get the dough started in time, since the hearts will take a little longer to make than just rolls.

I do have a shortcut that I guess I could share… When preparing the filling, I melt the butter first, then stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Then I spread that mixture evenly over the dough.

Next, I pull out my pizza cutter and cut strips that are 1/4″ to 1/2″ wide. I’ve found that this is a MUCH easier and less messy way to roll up the rolls. I can quickly roll the strips up and they look so pretty and clean cut.

For the icing, I add a little cream cheese (about 1 Tbl) to the powdered sugar, milk, and butter. Yum! I love how little things like this make the little eyes here light up, and I love seeing how they get so excited about little things I do on this day and have become tradition (because they don’t forget a thing). :)

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your little ones,

Mrs. Candace

Whatcha Makin’?

I go into the pantry to open the wheat pail… and before I could get the lid off, my 2 year old was by my side asking me what I was doing.

“I’m trying to get this lid off, but it’s hard”, I tell him. Sweet little thing tries his hardest to open the lid, and agrees with Mommy that it’s too hard. :)

The lid finally comes off and I scoop the berries. Soon I’m grinding them into fresh ground wheat, and by this time my 4 year old has made his way into the kitchen. “Whatcha makin’, Mommy?”, he asks. I smile and just tell him it’s a snack.

By this time the two little boys are pulling their chairs up to the counter, ready and eager to help Mommy make…. well, something. They don’t know what it is, but they sure are excited!

They help me get the ingredients added to the mixer – each willing to wait his turn to pour their ingredients in. 4 year old son is learning to read, but hasn’t quite made out what the recipe is yet… I think there are just too many words on the page. That’s okay, I want it to be a surprise. :)

Next comes the vanilla. “Vanilla?!?!”, 4 year old exclaims. “It must be granola!” No, it’s not granola I think, but smile at how excited they are getting.

Finally all of the ingredients are added except the last -

Chocolate Chips!

My two boys are really excited now. “Can we have some chocolate chips?”, they ask with the sweetest, most earnest plea. I smile and pour them a larger than normal pile on the table – maybe 10 or 12 each.

“Chocolate chips! Hey everybody, we can eat chocolate chips!!!”, 4 year old shouts excitedly. Older brother and sister suddenly appear out of nowhere, and all is quiet – they are busy eating, you know. :)

Chocolate chip cookies go into the oven and there are smiles all around. Today we made memories. Today 4 year old son knows that Mommy “sure must love us”, as he likes to say when he feels special.

It wasn’t the healthiest snack in the world, but it sure was healthy to smile a little and love a lot!
